Some drugs can have dangerous interactions

On Behalf of | Jun 13, 2025 | Medication Errors

Many medications are safe to take on their own. As long as the proper dosage is administered, they typically have a positive effect on the patient. Even when there are potential negative side effects, most cases turn out fine without any negative ramifications.

However, one form of medical malpractice occurs when a patient is given two or more medications that interact dangerously. This can lead to unexpected and potentially serious harm. For example, combining sedatives with antihistamines can dangerously slow the body’s internal processes.

In other situations, drugs may have similar components or even the same active ingredient. While taking either medication alone may be safe, using both at the same time could result in an overdose of that ingredient.

Interactions with other substances

Patients also need to understand how medications may interact with other substances they’re using. For instance, mixing opioids or other prescription painkillers with alcohol can significantly increase the risk of a life-threatening overdose.

Medical professionals have a duty to be aware of these potential interactions. They must inform patients about possible side effects and exercise great care when prescribing or administering medications. Patients place their trust in doctors, nurses and pharmacists to make safe and informed decisions.

When that duty of care is broken, prescription drug errors can result in serious health complications, or even fatal outcomes. Patients who have been harmed, or the family members of those who have passed away, need to understand their rights and whether they may be eligible to file a medical malpractice claim. They can consider compensation for medical expenses, funeral costs, lost earnings and more.
