2 common kinds of TBIs that happen after car accidents

On Behalf of | May 16, 2023 | Brain Injuries

If the head is struck during a car accident, this can result in a traumatic brain injury (TBI). TBIs are a medical emergency as they can be lethal or leave their victims permanently disabled.

Car accidents are a major contributor to TBIs. During an accident, both drivers and passengers frequently have no protection for their heads. Although an airbag may cushion some of the blow, victims frequently sustain injuries from the sudden force caused by the impact of the vehicle.

TBIs come in a variety of forms. What you need to know is this:

Concussions

Concussions are the type of TBI that are most common. Many contact athletes experience concussions on a regular basis. Concussions are also common in vehicle accident victims who bang their skulls.

When the head is struck, the brain shakes around the skull, resulting in a concussion. Chemicals are released by the brain when it oscillates. By stretching brain cells, these substances can alter and harm the brain. A severe concussion may cause a person to lose consciousness.

Bruising, swelling, and bleeding in the brain

The brain is incredibly delicate. The brain may bleed if a person suffers head trauma and brain damage. A brain bruise may be fatal, as opposed to a mild bruise one could get after smacking their leg on a table corner. The bruised brain may enlarge, putting pressure on the skull and causing it to bleed. Brain edema and hemorrhage can harm brain tissue.

You should get medical attention if you’ve been hurt in an accident. However, medical treatment can be pricey, and your car might also be damaged. If that occurs, you might need to think about your legal alternatives in order to recover your losses.
