A new medical study revealed a disturbing connection between Zithromax (azithromycin) and fatal heart problems. Research revealed that patients taking Zithromax, or Z-Pak, were 2.5 times more likely to die from a heart problem than those taking another antibiotic, amoxicillin.
Scientists were already aware that antibiotics bring the risk of serious side effects – including heart failure and heart attack – but the new study from Vanderbilt University shows that Zithromax presents a particularly high risk of heart complications when compared to other antibiotics.
The results of the Z-pak study are so troubling that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is launching an inquiry into the risks presented by the drug. The manufacturer of Zithromax, Pfizer, maintains that its popular product is safe to use, although the drug’s label warns that abnormal heart rhythms are a potential side effect of Z-Pak.
The study’s authors conclude that the risk of heart problems associated with Zithromax is relatively low, but that patients with preexisting heart issues, or at high risk of heart failure, should consider other antibiotics.
