In recent years, medical studies have uncovered alarming side effects associated with certain birth control pills, namely Yaz, Yasmin and NuvaRing. However, the latest birth control study made an especially troubling conclusion: Women who use combined hormonal birth control pills are 1.5 to 2 times more likely to suffer a stroke or heart attack.
Combined hormonal birth control pills describe drugs that contain both estrogen and progestin. Birth control devices, like NuvaRing and other vaginal rings, may also contain a combination of progestin and estrogen. In fact, the medical study found that women who use combined hormonal birth control devices – not pills – are the most at risk, and 2.5 to 3 times more likely to suffer a stroke or heart attack than a woman who is not using hormonal birth control.
Earlier studies have concluded that NuvaRing, Yaz and Yasmin present serious risk for the following types of blood clots:
- Venous thromboembolism
- Deep vein thrombosis
- Pulmonary embolism
