Reports Link Chantix To Stevens Johnson Syndrome And Suicide

The anti-smoking drug Chantix continues to be scrutinized by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and consumer watchdogs. The concerns about Pfizer’s smoking cessation drug began when consumers began to report that it caused them to suffer depression and suicidal behavior.

Chantix’s labels have been updated to warn about mood changes and thoughts of suicide, but many people believe that Pfizer’s move was too late, allowing preventable depression and suicides by Chantix users. These parties are only further alarmed after reports continue to surface alleging that Chantix may cause a serious skin condition called Stevens Johnson syndrome.

Stevens Johnson syndrome (SJS) is a rare disorder that causes rashes and blisters so severe that they cause the top layer of skin to die and shed from the body. The skin irritation is usually accompanied by flu-like symptoms. SJS necessitates hospitalization and may take weeks or months to heal.

If you’re taking Chantix, the FDA urges you to immediately discontinue its use if you notice any mood or behavior changes, as well as any skin irritation. If you or a loved one has been seriously harmed by Chantix side effects, contact an experienced Michigan medication errors attorney to explore your rights to recovering damages in a Chantix lawsuit.
