Malpractice Costs Down 28 Percent, But Medical Costs Up 58 Percent

We've been saying it for years:malpractice-thumb-160x240-23635-thumb-160x240-23566.jpg Medical malpractice is not a significant factor in the rising cost of American health care. Since 2003, medical malpractice costs have decreased 28.2 percent, yet the cost of medical care has increased 58.2 percent.

These telling medical malpractice statistics were released in a new study by Public Citizen, a nonprofit organization committed to representing citizens in "the halls of power."

In most states, politicians have successfully deceived citizens into believing that medical malpractice lawsuits are the primary reason for expensive healthcare. As a consequence, tort reform has greatly restricted an injured patient's ability to bring a medical malpractice lawsuit. Strict damage caps and evidentiary burdens strongly favor hospitals and doctors, so many victims are left without recourse after a physician injures them.

It's especially disturbing that some politicians continue to blame medical malpractice for the huge problems with American healthcare, rather than taking the more difficult road of identifying the true problems and taking steps to remedy them.

As experienced and accomplished medical malpractice attorneys, we understand how to best handle claims in a court system that is decidedly pro-defendant in patient injury cases. Contact McKeen & Associates, PC, for a free consultation about your injury.
