The American Association for Justice (AAJ) recently analyzed the history of women’s medical products and found that women are disproportionately harmed by devices. The research is particularly unsettling because women in the modern era seem just as likely to be harmed by a dangerous medical device as women decades ago.
Manufacturers and distributers often describe their products as miraculous solutions to women’s health issues, including birth control, pregnancy and menopause. Not only do these products routinely fall short of their advertised benefits, but they come with a lengthy list of harmful side effects.
Some of the recent devices and drugs that have profoundly impacted the lives of women include:
- Accutane
- Vaginal mesh
- DePuy hip implants
- Nuva Ring
- Ortho Evra (birth control patch)
- Yasmin/Yaz
- Mirena (intrauterine device) IUD
The side effects of these devices and drugs vary. Accutane has been linked to serious birth defects, although Hoffman-LaRoche failed to warn women of the danger. Transvaginal mesh has caused serious internal damage – and profound pain – to thousands of women. Yaz/Yasmin presents a risk of fatal blood clots and stroke. Unfortunately, we’re just starting to see the nature of damage that Bayer’s Mirena IUD may cause, including internal perforation.
