Considering Hip Or Knee Surgery? List Of Best And Worst Hospitals

Choose your hospital for hip or knee replacement surgery wisely, kneesurgery-thumb-160x106-30869.jpgas the complication rate can greatly differ. The U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) has recorded the number of complications that Medicare patients suffered after receiving knee or hip surgery at U.S. hospitals.

Specifically, CMS is tallying hospital readmissions following knee/hip surgery, as well as complications like blood clots, infection and defective implants. It then uses the data to provide an overview on hospital performance regarding these types of operations.

While CMS uses the data to help evaluate where it allows Medicare and Medicaid patients to seek hip/knee surgery, it is information that proves useful to those privately insured, too. Surgical complications can have a debilitating impact on a patient's life and may even prove fatal.

Here is a snapshot of the track record of Michigan hospitals concerning hip or knee surgery complications. The first rating listed for each hospital is whether the hospital is worse, average or better-than-average when compared to the national hip/knee surgery readmission rate. The second rating concerns the post-surgery complication rate.

  • Beaumont Health System in Grosse Point: average, worse
  • Beaumont Health System in Royal Oak: worse, better
  • Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo: average, better
  • Crittenton Hospital Medical Center in Rochester: average, better
  • Genesys Regional Medical Center in Grand Blanc: average, worse
  • Mclaren in Lansing: average, better
  • St. Joseph Mercy Oakland in Pontiac: better, better
  • William Beaumont Hospital in Troy: average, better

As you can see, St. Joseph Mercy Oakland had the best performance concerning hip and knee surgery in Michigan - at least with Medicare patients 65 and older.

The safety and the quality of care that the patients received is an important aspect in choosing the right hospital and surgeon for any surgery. The hospital should have treated numbers of knee or hip surgery even the most complex cases imaginable. Patients who have surgery at hospitals that do more of the same type of procedure often do better. The main goal of the hospital and the health care providers should be providing the best medical care for any patients.
