Injuries Caused by Hypoxia
Hypoxia, a lack of oxygen to the brain or other part of the body, is closely linked with ischemia, reduced blood flow to the brain. Hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is the general category for brain injuries caused by lack of blood flow or oxygen to a child's brain during labor and delivery. If the umbilical cord is compressed for too long during contractions, for example, the child will not get the necessary blood or oxygen to the brain, resulting in serious injuries:
