Warning Signs

Fetal distress refers to any physical signs exhibited by a child during the birth process that should indicate imminent danger to the child. Any competent doctor should be able to spot the warning signs of distress in pregnancy, labor, delivery and moments after birth:

  • Preeclampsia: Preeclampsia undiagnosed and treated can lead to eclampsia, which can involve comas, seizures and death.
  • High bilirubin: A high bilirubin count can indicate the possibility of kernicterus if not treated aggressively and quickly.
  • Umbilical cord compression: The fetal monitoring strip should detect the lack of blood flow and oxygen that result from umbilical cord compression.

Proper fetal monitoring would uncover evidence of fetal distress. When a doctor sees any of these warning signs, he or she can perform an emergency cesarean delivery, use forceps or vacuum extraction methods, or some other emergency delivery technique to prevent serious illness or injury to the mother or child. If your doctor failed to take emergency procedures, you are entitled to compensation for the tragic results.
